Frozen Pipes
Extremely cold winters can freeze water in pipes. When water turns to ice, it expands in your pipes, causing extreme pressure in the system that can cause weak areas to burst. Even small cracks in pipes can cause homes to flood, leading to significant property damage. The pipes that are most prone to freezing are those that are exposed to the elements or that run through unheated spaces. These pipes include sprinkler lines, pool lines, pipes in basements, garages, under kitchen sinks or along exterior walls.
There are a number of steps you can take to minimize the likelihood that your pipes freeze. Here are a few tips:
Let water slowly trickle out of faucets from pipes that run on an exterior wall or are in unheated areas
Insulate pipes in unheated areas of your home as well as pipes that sit against outside walls.
Leave your heat on with cabinet doors open to allow heat to circulate around uninsulated pipes.
If you realize your pipes are frozen, you should immediately shut off your water main to reduce pressure on the frozen pipes. This will also minimize flooding if your pipes burst. If you can access the frozen pipes, using a hair dryer or other small heater can thaw the pipes.
